چکیده

Purpose: The purpose of this research is to seek reasons for some videos going viral over YouTube (a type of social media platform). Methodology:Using YouTube APIs (Application Programming Interface) and Webometrics analyst tool, we collected data on about 100 all-time-most-viewed YouTube videos and information about the users associated with the videos. We constructed and tested an empirical model to understand the relationship among users‘ social and non-social capital—user age, gender, view count, subscriber, join date, total videos posted, video characteristics—postdate, duration, and video category, external network capital— in-links and hit counts, and Virality—likes, dislikes, favorite count, view count, and comment count. Partial Least Square (PLS) and Webometric analysis was used to explore the association among the constructs. Main findings: Among other findings, our results showed that popularity of the videos was not only the function of YouTube system per se, but that network dynamics (e.g., in-links and hits counts) and offline social capital (e.g., fan base and fame) play crucial roles in the viral phenomenon, particularly view count. Originality: We for the first time constructed and tested an empirical model to find out the determinants of viral phenomenon over YouTube.

Quantifying Virality of Information in Online Social Networks

The aim of this research is to propose a model through which the viral nature of an information item in an online social network can be quantified. Further, the authors propose an alternate technique for information asset valuation by accommodating virality in it which not only complements the existing valuation system, but also improves the accuracy of the results. They use a popularly availab...

Viral Actions: Predicting Video View Counts Using Synchronous Sharing Behaviors

In this article, we present a method for predicting the view count of a YouTube video using a small feature set collected from a synchronous sharing tool. We hypothesize that videos which have a high YouTube view count will exhibit a unique sharing pattern when shared in synchronous environments. Using a one-day sample of 2,188 dyadic sessions from the Yahoo! Zync synchronous sharing tool, we d...

The Role of Multimedia Content in Determining the Virality of Social Media Information

The paper provides empirical evidence supporting the assumption that content plays a critical role in determining the virality, i.e., the influence, of social media information. The analysis focuses on multimedia content on Twitter and explores the idea that links to multimedia information increase the virality of posts. In particular, we put forward the following three main hypotheses: (1) pos...
